Cold Morning

Through an accidental crack in the curtain
I can see the eight o'clock light change from
charcoal to a faint gassy blue, inventing things

in the morning that has a thick skin of ice on it
as the water tank has, so nothing flows, all is bone,
telling its tale of how hard the night had to be

for any heart caught out in it, just flesh and blood
no match for the mindless chill that's settled in,
a great stone bird, its wings stretched stiff

from the tip of Letter Hill to the cobbled bay, its gaze
glacial, its hook-and-scrabble claws fast clamped
on every window, its petrifying breath a cage

in which all the warmth we were is shivering.

Giolla Brighde Ó hEódhasa : El Poema

El Poema

Oh lector de este pequeño libro
Házle caso a esta fuente;

No las templé  en deslumbrante Gaélico;

No he- no tendría caso-

Si he tomado palabras doradas
Muchas las he simplemente vuelto oscuras;
Anillos de gemas ornamentales
Solamente sirven para oscurecer la vaina.

El pergamino de deudas debe ser redimido;
he escrito para ti sin adornos;
Escribe tú esta alianza en tu corazón.

O reader of this little book
take the heed of its source;
Greater its importance than its appearance,
This work is the nurse of thy soul.

The treasure for which a man purchased
The field in which it was hidden-
Here is the field wherein that treasure lies;
A lack of desire for it must not be.

The pearl for which a man surrendered
All his worldly possessions:
If the ground where it lies is searched for it,
Here, gratis, will it found.

Behold now coming from heaven
A sunlit sequence of carbuncle gems,
The abundant teachings of God for us,
Copious showers poured forth by scripture.

I gave them not-that’s no loss-
A tempering in dazzling Gaelic;
In God, the lake fountain of jewels,
What a quenching they have received!

I have not- that would not do-
Made dark with bright words
That gleaming gem-tempered host from heaven,
The shining words of the Lord.

If I had taken to gilding words
Many had I simply made obscure;
Rings of ornamental gems
Merely serve to obscure the sheath.

The scroll of debts must be redeemed;
The charter to thy domain from the Lord
Unembellished have I written for thee;
Write thou this covenant into thy heart.
